Proofreading

Finds surface errors such as spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. Final step in the editing process.

Formatting

Focus on the manuscript or document looking correct and accessible to the reader, including layout, margins, paragraphs, in-text citations, and references.

Copy Editing

Improve readability by assessing clarity, accuracy, style, and citations. Ensures work meets relevant style guidelines, including Chicago Manual Style and AP Style.

Advanced Editing

Offer of line or developmental editing. Line editing looks at word choice and syntax and limits overuse of jargon. Developmental editing looks at manuscript as a whole, such as structure and content.

What is the difference between proofreading and editing?

Proofreading simply finds surface level mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure – this is typically the last stage of review before publication. When editing, I will consider the clarity, syntax, and structure of a sentence or the work as a whole, ensure the accuracy of citations, and verify the work meets any relevant style guidelines.

Can’t AI proofread your work?

Would you use Google Translate to learn a foreign language? While AI tools can help catch simple errors in spelling and grammar, they often make corrections where it’s not needed, miss formatting issues, and don’t understand the difference between an error and a deliberate choice. More importantly, AI tools cannot ensure contextual accuracy or understand the tone and voice of a piece of writing.

AI may improve writing as a whole, but human proofreaders will catch more nuanced errors and provide necessary personalized feedback. Depending on the type of work, there may also be ethical considerations related to bias, privacy, and security in giving AI tools access to a document. For this reason, I do not supplement my proofreading with AI tools.

How are my rates set?

My rates are informed by the Editorial Freelancers Association published rates for various materials and genres and determined by my experience.

Do I offer discounts?
